Historical note: The history of the airport dates back to 1923, when the first flight on the Prague-Bratislava route was made with one passenger on board. The years 1947 and 1948 are significant in the history of the airport, when construction began and it was officially opened in 1951. With its growing popularity and traffic, the airport underwent several renovations until it was transformed into what is now Slovakia’s largest airport.
It has been named after M. R. Štefánik, an important Slovak politician, scientist, diplomat, and general, since July 21, 1993.
